The new labeling requirements are now in effect.  All foods must list allergens with their common names to make it easier for consumers to identify allergens in food.  The top allergens covered by this law are:

  • Peanuts
  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Tree nuts (almonds, brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios, walnuts).
  • Soy
  • Sesame seeds
  • Seafood (fish, crustaceans and shellfish)
  • Sulphites
  • Mustard seed
  • Glutens (oats, barley and rye)
  • Wheat

There are still some exceptions such as: beer and alcoholic beverages; bakery, deli or bulk foods; and "may contain" statements are not regulated.

The new rules require food manufacturers to list the common name of the allergen either within the list of ingredients or in a CONTAINS "________" statement.
