Last week, a published report said that a variety of cake and cookie recalls were linked to flour containing “low levels” of undeclared peanut that was supplied to a Georgia company.

Food Safety News said the Georgia company, CSM Bakery Solutions, used the flour in products distributed to its customers. The company said that testing after production revealed the presence of peanut. Peanut was not listed on the product labels.

“Even trace amounts of a food allergen can be deadly,” said Dr. Cary Sennett, President and CEO of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA).

“These risks cannot be overstated,” said Dr. Sennett. “Food safety protocols are designed to prevent instances of cross-contact. Recalls show the importance of having a strong system in place." 

CSM Bakery did not name the flour supplier and has made other arrangements. AAFA encourages families dealing with food allergy to review the list of products included on the recall as of 5/5/2016 and to check to see if you have purchased any of the recalled foods.

AAFA is the nation’s oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with asthma and allergies. Its Kids with Food Allergies (KFA) division educates and supports the community about food allergy management and treatment, including news about food safety and product recalls.

“AAFA is concerned about any possible risk that may exist in consuming these products if you are allergic to peanut,” said Dr. Sennett. “We urge everyone to spread the news of these recalls within the food allergy community so that we may prevent any accidental exposure to peanut allergen,” he said.
