Mylan has taken a positive step in expanding programs to increase EpiPen® access and affordability. The allergy community demanded a response, and we were heard.

It’s important to recognize that the challenges of access and affordability are complex, and that solving these problems will require a broader, collaborative, conversation about the structure of insurance, healthcare choices and much more. There is much work yet to be done.  And we remain committed to bringing your voice and needs to that conversation, so that the medicines you rely on are available—affordably and simply. We will continue to advocate for long-term changes so that no one falls through the cracks.

We spoke to Mylan today to ask questions about the changes they announced. Some questions could not be answered yet, but we will update you as soon as we learn more.

  1. When will the EpiPen co-pay website page be updated with the new terms and new cards?

Answer: The EpiPen website has been updated to offer the new $300 Savings Card. There are some parts of the site that still reference the old amount of $100.  However, the Savings Card provides $300 off effective immediately.

  2. When do the new terms of the Savings Cards go into effect and when do they expire?

Answer: The offer went into effect immediately. If you had printed a Savings Card before today, that card has been reprogrammed to offer $300 off.

This offer can be used for a total of six EpiPen 2-Pak cartons until 12/31/2016.

  3. When will pharmacies receive communications about the updated savings cards?

Answer: Pharmacies have already been notified. The My EpiPen Savings Card has been programmed to provide the new offer of up to $300 per EpiPen 2-Pak.

  4. Will Mylan set up a rebate or refund retroactively if patients just filled a prescription recently and had high out-of-pocket costs?

Answer: Yes. Details will be coming soon.

  5. Is Mylan setting up an 800 number specifically to answer customers’ questions about this? When will it be staffed?

Answer: Consumers are welcome to call 800-796-9526 to speak with Mylan customer service representatives during business hours.

  6. When will the patient assistance program changes go into effect? Where will patients go to get this assistance? Will they be using RX Assist or something else?

Answer: The changes went into effect immediately. Visit RX Assist if you would like to apply for assistance. The program has expanded in two ways:

    - The eligibility has changed from 200% of Federal Poverty Level to 400%.
    - Assistance will expand to “under-insured” people who have limited pharmacy benefits that provide generics-only coverage.

  7. What will Mylan be doing for federal employees who are unable to use the Savings cards? (Including military families using TRICARE)

[Unable to answer at this time. We will update you when more details are available.]

  8. Will there be any changes to the EpiPen4Schools program?

Answer: No. The program will continue. It currently has 65,000 schools enrolled.

  9. Mylan announced it is opening a pathway for patients to order directly – when will details about this be announced? We have concerns about timing (how will shipping be handled to protect the EpiPens; will it be through overnight shipping to get EpiPens into patients’ hands as soon as possible, etc.)

Answer: Mylan began working on this project prior to the recent media coverage. They will be addressing how to safely distribute the medicine. Regulatory authorities will need to review their proposed plan. They hope to launch this program soon and more details will be forthcoming.

  10. Will there be any changes in EpiPen price to Medicare or Medicaid?

Answer: The price of EpiPens is already heavily discounted for Medicare and Medicaid, so patients should not have high out-of-pocket costs.

I am on Medicare (they don't cover the cost) and a supplement, but my out of pocket cost is still around $300.00.  Being on a federal program, the savings cards are not eligible.  Could not afford my epi-pen, so I'm going without.  By the way, can't take the injections either because I went into anaphylaxis.  What are we supposed to do if on Medicare because I know I'm not the only one?

I am so sorry!   Something definitely needs to change.  Hopefully there will be a more affordable generic soon, but that doesn't help you now.

Would #6 above apply to you?

Have you asked your doctor if they have any resources to help?
