Mt. Airy Meat Center Mesquite Chicken Breast Raw Ready to Cook recalled due to undeclared wheat.

WASHINGTON, May 24, 2012 - Mt. Airy Meat Center, a Mt. Airy, N.C. establishment, is recalling approximately 100 pounds of a frozen, raw chicken breast product because of misbranding and an undeclared allergen. The product contains wheat, a known allergen that is not declared on the label, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The products subject to recall are:

  • Individual vacuum-sealed packages of “MT. AIRY MEAT CENTER MESQUITE CHICKEN BREAST RAW READY TO COOK,” weighing approximately 1.5 pounds each.

The packages bear the establishment number “P-17690” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The product was sold to consumers at the company’s retail store.

The problem was discovered by FSIS during a routine label review. Mt. Airy Meat Center receives this product from a supplier and repackages it for individual retail sale, and the problem may have occurred due to a change in suppliers. FSIS and the company have not received reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.

Consumers and reporters with questions about the recall should contact the company’s owner, Gray Gwyn, at (336) 786-2023.
