She will cover laws and regulations that apply to airline passengers, and your legal rights.

About Our Speakers:

 

Matthew J. Greenhawt, MD, MBA, MSc β€” Dr. Greenhawt is Board-certified in pediatrics and allergy and immunology.  He currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Allergy and Immunology at the U-M, and is research director for the University of Michigan Food Allergy Center. Dr. Greenhawt is also the co-director of the University of Michigan Combined Pediatric Eosinophilic Esophagitis Clinic.  A graduate of Tufts University, where he earned both his medical and Master of Business Administration degrees, he completed a fellowship in allergy and immunology at the U-M in 2008.  He also received a Masters of Science in Health and Healthcare Policy at the U-M Rackham School of Graduate Studies in 2012.

Dr. Greenhawt is a health services researcher, with an eye towards using his work to influence food allergy related health-care policy.  His specific research interests include parental understanding of food allergy risk, utilization of food allergy related health services, adherence to practice guidelines, optimal strategies for diagnosis and treatment of food allergic disorders, and Quality of Life among families with food allergy, FPIES, and Eosinophilic Esophagitis. He is a national expert on the safety of Influenza vaccine in egg allergic recipients, and on in-flight allergic reactions to peanut. He has 40 peer reviewed publications on a broad variety of topics, including peanut and tree nut reactions on commercial airlines, the safety of influenza vaccine in egg allergic children (including 3 national practice parameters on this subject), use of oral food challenges, the management of eosinophilic esophagitis, and food allergy policy related issues.

He serves as a member of several national committees for both the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology and American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, and has served as an advisor on behalf of these organizations to the Centers for Disease Control Advisory Council on Immunization Practices pertaining to his work with influenza vaccine. He is also an associate editor for the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. He has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health, the ACAAI, and private foundations. 

 

Laurel Francoeur, JD, graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and a minor in Philosophy. She is also a graduate of Suffolk Law School and has been a practicing lawyer since 1996. She is a spokesperson for the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of American and also is Education Project Manager for Kids With Food Allergies, a division of AAFA. She is a support group leader for the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America and served on their board of directors. She was on the FAI (Food Allergy Initiative) Steering Committee. She has appeared on numerous TV and radio media talking about anaphylaxis and epinephrine advocacy issues.

 

Laurel-Francoeur-JDShe has drafted legislation in Massachusetts which now gives students easier access to life-saving medication, and Laurel has also testified at the state and federal level about food allergy issues.

 

Laurel is the author of β€œHow to Advocate for Your Food Allergic Child: A Manual for Getting What Your Child Needs at School” and "Flying With Food Allergies: What You Need To Know." She is also co-founder of Greenlaurel Documents, an online source for food allergy tools including automated health care plans and restaurant cards.
