Congrats to this Red Sox player, whose mom had this to say about him: "My little Red Sox Player! He faces allergies with bravery and determination. Michael would rather miss out on something than cause anyone around him to have to avoid a food they love. He's selfless and caring and our Super allergy Super Star! " Michael is the winner of a prize package from Go Veggie and a KFA t-shirt! Congrats, Michael!

Unfortunately, our insurance won't cover auvi-Q. It is interesting, however, since we pay 90% of our prescriptions. I did find out through an Auvi-Q rep that pharmacies set their own price. I had the pharmacist check on the pricing since we pay most of the price anyway, but it was about $39 more. It is sold to the pharmacies as the same price as the Epi-pens. My husband is self imployed - thus the expensive insurance.

Welcome Esther!! Sorry to hear that you are dealing with food allergies, but we are glad that you found us! You've come to the right place for support. The majority of insurances do cover epinephrine auto-injectors, but it really depends on your insurance policy as to which ones they will cover and how much they will cover. Has your doctor called in a prescription to your pharmacy already? Once your pharmacy has a prescription on file they should be able to submit a claim and tell you what...

Does "smaller" refer to height, weight, or both? I'm wondering how much of the size difference has to do with nutritional deficiencies vs. an overall awareness of our diets. Because we read every label, every time, we notice not only allergen-containing foods, but also artificial colors, flavors, and sweeteners. Our kids eat a lot less junk food than average American kids, and we eat out a lot less too (restaurant food tends to be higher in fat and sodium than home-cooked food). That...

Good Morning! I'm a Mom of 2, ages 3.5 and 18 months. In our household we have an anaphylactic dairy allergy and a corn allergy. I am the one with the anaphylaxis and I've lived WELL with this allergy all my life. I'd just like to say that Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and if there is extended family and friends who will cooperate with your food allergies, you can have a safe and delicious Thanksgiving. It's about trust... and about education... and possibly about providing recipes and...

I had an anaphalactic reaction after eating one of these bars for breakfast last year. I lost consciousness while on the phone to my mother and was taken to the ER via ambulance after she called a neighbor. I assumed it was something else I must have come into contact with (although it was the only thing I had eaten that morning). I stupidly continued to eat the bars, getting sick every time (although not as bad). I thought it must have been one of the other ingredients, since it was milk...

Oh geez, thanks for posting this! I never in a million years would EVER think of this! Granted, most schools have moved to dry erase boards by now, but this is certainly something I should talk to Leo's teachers about in the future! What we have to look out for with FA kids :/. Its mind-bogling!

Since so many Halloween candies contain allergens for my children we've started a new family tradition for the holiday. Rather than handing out any candy or treats to the 200 or so kids who come to our neighborhood we leave our house and have a nice night out. Our kids can choose a restaurant then we go to a movie. I buy and/or make them some quality non-allergenic treats that they can enjoy and add some to their lunches for the following week. They love it. I love that I can go through the...

Thanks so much for all the great ideas and information! We give out non-food treats - things like glow sticks, glow necklaces, temporary tattoos, stickers, and small toys. The kids who come to our house AND their parents really seem to like these "treats".

As a mom of a food-allergic kid, Halloween is very difficult for us. Especially now, as she's getting older and in school with other kids that like and enjoy the candy aspect of Halloween. On Halloween night, we choose to hand out food-related treats. This year, we're handing out glow-in-the-dark Halloween tattoos. This way, we show our daughter that it's okay and perfectly acceptable to get something other than candy during trick-or-treating. Also, we have our daughter help us hand out...

Hi Colleen, I believe we are talking about the same issue. We are aware of the re-bagging issue--we included it under the Dum Dums/Spangler photo (second to last photo) and highlighted it as #3 at the top of the blog post: Quote: Quote: How parents choose to deal with this issue may vary. In our Halloween tips in other articles, we've shared ideas such as trading your child's bag of trick-or-treating candy for all safe candy, or for toys, etc. The tradition is sometimes called the Switch...

Hi Colleen! We do the same thing with all the candy that DS gets on Halloween. Due to the issues with repackaging there's no way to know if the safe candy has residue on them (or whether the residue is from the various home owners that I see snacking on treats as they give out candy ), we usually just give all the candy away and we either trade it out via the "Switch Witch" or we weigh it and give DS money for it. He's happy either way! Welcome to KFA , and hoping your loved ones have a safe...

Until I call to find out details this kills it for us! "This product is manufactured on shared equipment also used for dairy, soy, corn and wheat", not their fault that my son is so allergic, but I am really tired of not finding truly safe chips for my severely dairy allergic son!

It was really fun and easy to prepare the salad for photographing! The cinnamon in the dressing is an unusual choice but goes so well to bring out the sweetness in the carrots. Hi Yvonne - sorry you had a bad experience at Chipotle. Have you checked them lately?? They're in the process of phasing out the soy in the offerings in favor of rice bran oil. http://community.kidswithfooda...hipotle-menu-changes Also, we have a number of members who are vegan and dealing w/ other food allergies as well - I encourage you to post on the forums asking whatever questions you have.

All of these are based on user feedback. If you've had a bad experience, then go share that. If you've had a good experience somewhere, go share that. As for Chipotle, I know they are rolling out the change over. Our local restaurants have signs up about the rice oil change. I'm not sure the start of their printed material. I suggest calling or stopping in to ask about where that particular restaurant is in the changeover. PF Changs is very allergy aware. While it may not seem allergy...

Hi kally, My son has a very severe milk allergy and we eat at Chipotle 1-2 times per week. I can totally understand your apprehension. Here are some tips: One person handles your food. They will change their gloves first - sometimes you have to remind them but it's coorporate policy AFAIK. I always ask them to hold my son's tray - do not slide it on the counter. We only get rice, beans, and meat from the bar. Any salsa, lettuce or guac comes from the fridge under the bar or the back.

Mexican and Italian restaurants skeeved me out too, until we discovered that one of our local Italian restaurants had safe bread for DS (flour, yeast, olive oil, sugar, and water). It was the first restaurant that puts bread on the table that was safe for him. He's also very happy with a plate of pasta with olive oil and herbs, and he has been spoiled rotten there. Mexican restaurants where I live often have language barrier issues, so I never trusted them with FA, though I enjoyed the food...

I was very skeptical of Mexican and Italian restaurants in the beginning. The idea that there was so much cheese in the kitchen made me very nervous. However, I was surprised to learn that many Mexican restaurants don't use much in the way of milk or butter... just lots of cheese. For DS we are almost always able to get him white rice and beans (black or refried - hold the cheese). Occasionally we get him meat, too, but honestly he loves rice and beans so much he prefers them over the meat.

I did finally make this! But I only made the cauliflower risotto part as a side dish with grilled sausage. Bc I didn't want to drag out my food processor, I used the large side of a box grater to grate down the cauliflower. Easy peasy! Since it was a side and I wasn't putting a sauce on it, I wanted it "wetter" like a traditional risotto. So I added a cup of homemade chicken stock and let that cook down a little. I seasoned with lemon pepper. I really liked it, but the rest of the family was...

@ Wendy Mains-- I think I know why your child had to use his epi pen so many times in the ER/hospital. Hospitals are FILLED with corn-derived products. I am also corn-allergic. I found out the hard way, after a lifetime (I'm in my 50s!) of migraines, joint pains, spontaneous vomiting seemingly without a cause, I ended up at the big famous institution in Minnesota. The immunologist looked at the results of a basic saliva genetic test that I had purchased and had processed. He said I should...

As the mother of a son with an anaphylactic alergy to corn I can't stress the importance of carrying the epipen at all times even when food intake is not planned. He has been tested thoroughly and his only allergy is corn so we know if he has a reaction then corn was present and his reaction occurs within seconds. We walked into a small hospital for a pre op appointment and we weren't inside for more than 3 min. and he had his worst reaction ever (the 7th one that year-corn has a nasty habit...

I was complacent. My 14 year old daughter was complacent. Eye-rolls and annoyed posture every time I asked if she had her epi-pen. She doesn't remember her reaction when she was 2.75 years old and there have been many, many expired epi-pens since. I used to say it was the best money I ever threw away. Until this year, I got annoyed. I was certain I had sent in an epi-pen in the fall for school. The nurse sent an email to all delinquent parents of food allergic kids. "Your child's epi-pen is...

I'm shocked, but not surprised as I know several people who don't carry the epi pens with them for their kids. I don't understand what good the epi will do if its at home and you are out. I feel as if my DDs medication bag is an extension of her. Wherever she goes, it goes. When she was first diagnosed several years back, there were 2 occasions I left it home. I turned right around to get it. To me, that is her lifeline. NOTHING is more important! I am equally as shocked with people whose...

I do have a heating core, but I've found that allergen friendly cakes don't always bake well in larger sizes. This is especially true of egg free cakes since they lack key structure. If you can get it baked through, the chance of cracking or crumbling while handling it is pretty high. I've found that Wacky Cake doesn't do well in anything bigger than 9x13 - it takes so long for the center to heat up that the single acting leavening just fizzles out. Gluten/wheat free cakes are very difficult...
