Re: Food Allergy Test: What Does It Mean?

MulanMommy ·
Jennifer: AGREED!!! DS was tested low score on WHEAT & SOY both skin test and blood test, we never took it seriously only avoided wheat by itself (wheat bread) and soy by itself (tofu, soybean..etc) but since birth he had eczema and stuffy nose throughout the year. We thought it's more related to seasonal/weather, but his skin problem and congestion issue lasted through summer-winter, hot OR cold seasons; we also thought it's environmental (dust mite) so we changed to special pillows/...

Re: Food Allergy Test: What Does It Mean?

Jennifer Roberge ·
Hi MulanMommy - It's incredible what food can do to the body - good or bad. In our son's case, he now has severe reactions, borderline anaphylaxis, with dairy, soy, gluten, corn, and tree nuts. He can not even have one bite - or a trace. Still also triggers eczema. He used to be very sensitive to tomatoes, red pepper, and cantelope, but now that his eczema is under control, he can eat these things every few days, but as you said, never more than two days in a row. The same with coconut. So...

Until I call to find out details this kills it for us! "This product is manufactured on shared equipment also used for dairy, soy, corn and wheat", not their fault that my son is so allergic, but I am really tired of not finding truly safe chips for my severely dairy allergic son!

Re: The AllergyEats 2014 List of Most Allergy-Friendly Restaurant Chains

Kathy P ·
All of these are based on user feedback. If you've had a bad experience, then go share that. If you've had a good experience somewhere, go share that. As for Chipotle, I know they are rolling out the change over. Our local restaurants have signs up about the rice oil change. I'm not sure the start of their printed material. I suggest calling or stopping in to ask about where that particular restaurant is in the changeover. PF Changs is very allergy aware. While it may not seem allergy...

Re: The AllergyEats 2014 List of Most Allergy-Friendly Restaurant Chains

When it is time to retest her allergies, her parents pick 6-8 possible allergens to test at that time. They are testing through blood tests once or twice a year. What gets tested depends on what she has been eating and what symptoms she has been having. So, when something has not been tested at one particular time, they continue to assume an active allergy based on prior testing and continue to avoid that food. Some foods are tested more frequently than others (e.g., dairy is tested most...

Re: Six-Year-Old's Heart Stops After Eating Macadamia Nut Cookie, Life Saved by First Responders

Kids With Food Allergies ·
KFA ADMIN: There is one statement in the article that is incorrect that we would like to clarify. In the U.S., food manufacturers are not required to state if food was processed in the same facility as peanuts (or any other major food allergen). FDA regulated foods are required to list top 8 allergens in the ingredients list if the food contains one of those allergens (peanut, tree nut, milk, egg, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish).

Thanks. I myself only have eczema, haven't tested myself for food or environmental yet. But my son is the one who suffers. He has eczema, and a severe allergy to peanuts/ tree nuts, and high allergy to wheat, gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, corn, pinto beans, tomatoes, potatoes...and a picky eater on top of all that. And highly allergic to cat/dog dander and dust mites. Very hard to find stuff he can eat, or will eat. Hoping to find some support here. ☺

Re: How to Decorate an Allergy-Friendly Cake (Part 1)

Kathy P ·
I do have a heating core, but I've found that allergen friendly cakes don't always bake well in larger sizes. This is especially true of egg free cakes since they lack key structure. If you can get it baked through, the chance of cracking or crumbling while handling it is pretty high. I've found that Wacky Cake doesn't do well in anything bigger than 9x13 - it takes so long for the center to heat up that the single acting leavening just fizzles out. Gluten/wheat free cakes are very difficult...

Re: Non-Cupcake Classroom Birthday Celebration Idea

Bustermonkey ·
That is a cute idea. However, please remember anytime we offer food to our child's classmates we risk allergies. My youngest daughters is allergic to Yellow 5 (which is found in almost all applesauce brands - except the all natural). If she were to eat this snack, she would have a very severe rash for the remainder of the day. Most of us send snacks that avoid peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, milk, wheat. But, allergies come in many different forms. For classroom birthdays, I always avoid food.

Do the Food Allergen Labeling Laws Apply to Cosmetics?

Kids With Food Allergies ·
From lip balm and shampoo to moisturizers and eye shadow, cosmetics are overseen by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Even though these products go on our lips and skin, the FDA provides a lot less oversight than you might expect. In fact, most of the time the government does not get involved until there is a problem. Here’s what you need to know. What are “cosmetics”? The government defines “cosmetics” based on how the product is meant to be used. Cosmetics are meant to be rubbed,...
