We have found our local Applebee' s to be very supportive of our granddaughter's allergies (top 8 plus tomatoes, beans, peas, corn, beef). They cook her a chicken breast in a clean pan w/o oils, steam her fresh veggies from unused previously unopened packages of each veggie, lettuce w/o dressing (sometimes she has her chicken in the salad and we bring some dressing she can have), etc. And, they come check on her frequently to make sure there are no problems. They do it all with a friendly...
@ Wendy Mains-- I think I know why your child had to use his epi pen so many times in the ER/hospital. Hospitals are FILLED with corn-derived products. I am also corn-allergic. I found out the hard way, after a lifetime (I'm in my 50s!) of migraines, joint pains, spontaneous vomiting seemingly without a cause, I ended up at the big famous institution in Minnesota. The immunologist looked at the results of a basic saliva genetic test that I had purchased and had processed. He said I should...
I applaud your effort to provide education by writing this letter. Thank you very much for meeting this with a helpful hand. I have one request as you move forward in providing education and awareness-- In these discussions please be mindful that we need to educate and raise awareness that life-threatening food allergies are not restricted to those with nut & peanut allergy. Unfortunately too many people harbor this dangerous misimpression that only nuts cause life threatening reactions.
I enjoyed the July 31st webinar! It was very informative. I do disagree with one point. He stated that a small study showed that only a rash occurred with peanut butter spread on an allergic child's skin. My child has had hives and swelling with just skin contact....Many times. For example; After a kiss on the cheek by someone who just ate a PBJ, my child had a face full of hives and swollen lips. After sitting next to a child eating peanuts, she had hives all over her body, and a runny...
Thank you for sharing these tips and recipes! When I have to make one in a rush--I put a box of Enjoy Life soft baked cookies (gluten, dairy, egg, nut free) into a bag and smash them up...then I just press them into the pie plate! The snickerdoodles are great as a base for pumpkin pie!
It's too late for Turkey Day, but for next month, what I found when I am making dough is to make it days ahead of time and let it sit in the fridge for a few days. Somehow it came out better that way.
My gf dough has to sit in fridge at least a few hours. I just try to make it the night before. If I have all my sides done Wed, I can bake my pies Thurs. No one is coming for dinner, so I don't have to "entertain".
We are dealing with a similar situation to the person who posted the question. We host a lot of gatherings and I request that people do not bring items that have peanuts, tree nuts or sesame to our house. People are fairly willing to comply. I see it as a part of a communications campaign about food allergies. Most people really just don't know and no one wants someone to react to food they make. No one! So, I do my best to phrase things in a pleasant way and not come off like a compulsive,...
Congratulations to our second #morethanfoodallergies 2019 winner! Rising high school senior Kylie Rogers discovered she had a severe allergy to peanuts four years ago, but she doesn't let it steal her joy, even when it can prove to be a hurdle to leap. "She has navigated her way through high school with this allergy, and it is not always easy," says her mom Gail Rogers. "High school is a very social time for teens, and Kylie has to often say no to events, and restaurants that are not safe...
Thanks for your feedback, Steph and Ellen! When schools follow guidelines to prevent allergic reactions, it reduces the likelihood of a severe reaction. If one does occur, there will be multiple signs...and if those signs are the under the mask, it is likely that the student would be uncomfortable enough to touch/remove the mask. It's important for caregivers to empower students to alert an adult if they are not feeling well. The risk assessment at this time is that the risk of coronavirus...
I CAN'T wear a face covering. It is a seizure trigger for me. Just as there should not be a one-size-fits-all 504 plan, so too there should not be a one-size-fits-all cloth face covering plan. I am frustrated with the "recommendations" and the "guidance" I get from officials. I am frustrated with quite frankly, blatantly discriminatory practices put in place "for the greater good" which deny reasonable accommodations for me and my children, as well as access to services. It is really...
