Re: Food Allergy Test: What Does It Mean?
I'd like to thank everyone for posting such wonderful comments. I'd like to address two topics that were mentioned so far: 1. Eczema and food allergies can be a very difficult and complicated topic, which may need it's own blog post in the future. While I can't give out specific medical advice in this forum, I am happy to help elaborate a bit more. In general , the majority of children with eczema do not have an external cause of their skin condition. Eczema is a genetic, chronic, skin...

Re: Food Allergy Test: What Does It Mean?
Lindsay - right. Good doctor-patient partnerships are key, especially for complicated cases such as eczema. As Dr. Stukus indicates, the evaluation and care for complicated eczema cases needs to be individualized for the child. Thank you for posting your comments!

Re: Check Ingredient Statements on Halloween Candy
One thing not noted in the article is to take care with candies that are repackaged (such as Smarties, Tootsie Rolls). Often, they are repackaged by third parties that also package items with common allergens, such as nuts. This is technically a labelling issue, but it is something to be aware of with candy.

Re: Milk Allergy Alert: NuGO Bars
I'm glad they finally recalled their products. My son actually had a reaction from one of their bars last year, and I had to give him the epi-pen. When I spoke with them they assured me there was no milk or traces of milk in their products. I don't think they are counting my son's reaction in their count of only one reaction reported so far. It's too bad that they did not act when I told them about our reaction so no subsequent reactions would've happened with anybody else. It is going to be...

Re: New Epinephrine Study Shows Alarming Results
@ Wendy Mains-- I think I know why your child had to use his epi pen so many times in the ER/hospital. Hospitals are FILLED with corn-derived products. I am also corn-allergic. I found out the hard way, after a lifetime (I'm in my 50s!) of migraines, joint pains, spontaneous vomiting seemingly without a cause, I ended up at the big famous institution in Minnesota. The immunologist looked at the results of a basic saliva genetic test that I had purchased and had processed. He said I should...

Re: Food Allergy Awareness: Warnings on Food Labels Are Voluntary
Are you referring to products that "may contain" traces of the top 8 food allergens due to shared equipment issues? The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) that went into effect in 2006 does not require manufacturers to list common allergenic ingredients resulting from shared equipment and cross contamination issues. It still remains the responsibility of consumers to read labels carefully and call manufacturers to be sure that each food is safe for their unique...

Different Skin Structure in Some People With Eczema Could Play a Role in Food Allergy Development
Researchers at National Jewish Health and their colleagues have identified structural and molecular markers in the skin of atopic dermatitis patients that distinguish those who have food allergies from those who do not. The findings strengthen emerging science indicating that the skin plays a major role in food allergies, and suggest that personalized treatments for a subset of atopic dermatitis patients might help prevent food allergies.

Do the Food Allergen Labeling Laws Apply to Cosmetics?
From lip balm and shampoo to moisturizers and eye shadow, cosmetics are overseen by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Even though these products go on our lips and skin, the FDA provides a lot less oversight than you might expect. In fact, most of the time the government does not get involved until there is a problem. Here’s what you need to know. What are “cosmetics”? The government defines “cosmetics” based on how the product is meant to be used. Cosmetics are meant to be rubbed,...
