Re: How to Make Your Own Allergy-Friendly Seed Butter to Replace Peanut Butter

Former Member ·
I have tried to make my own sunflower seed butter in my food processor, but even after a looong time in the processor and a fair amount of canola, I still get a "paste" so thick you can slice it! What am I doing wrong? Do I just need a better processor? We haven't retried pumpkin seeds yet - she got hives from it about a year ago when we first tried it. I'll probably wait until pumpkins start showing up in stores so I can get truly uncontaminated seeds. Thanks!

Re: Replacing Lost Nutrients Due to Food Allergies

pates88 ·
Does "smaller" refer to height, weight, or both? I'm wondering how much of the size difference has to do with nutritional deficiencies vs. an overall awareness of our diets. Because we read every label, every time, we notice not only allergen-containing foods, but also artificial colors, flavors, and sweeteners. Our kids eat a lot less junk food than average American kids, and we eat out a lot less too (restaurant food tends to be higher in fat and sodium than home-cooked food). That...

Re: Egg Allergy Is No Longer a Contraindication for the Flu Vaccine

My dd received the flu shot for the first time this year. She has had severe reactions to miniscule amounts of egg. But she had no reaction to the flu shot! It was quite a relief. Her allergist, who sees many kids with severe egg allergy, said at most he's seen a few kids with minor reactions. The vast majority have not reacted at all.

Re: Food Allergy Test: What Does It Mean?

Missy24, sorry to hear that your son had a severe reaction to cashew. Unfortunately you can develop allergies at any time, so in his case he was not allergic before but then became allergic. The article is referring to testing positive to a food but being able to eat it without reaction. Some docs will run a panel to whole list of foods, even if the patient has only reacted to one. This can lead to avoiding more foods than is necessary as there is a high chance of false positives with...

We often mess up between food allergy and food intolerance. Food allergy usually comes on suddenly. Even a small amount of food can trigger an allergic reaction. Food allergy appens every time you eat that particular foo and can be life-threatening too. On the other hand, food intolerance generally comes on graduall and occurs when you eat a lot of that particular food. It is not life-threatening

Re: Milk Allergy Alert: NuGO Bars

I had an anaphalactic reaction after eating one of these bars for breakfast last year. I lost consciousness while on the phone to my mother and was taken to the ER via ambulance after she called a neighbor. I assumed it was something else I must have come into contact with (although it was the only thing I had eaten that morning). I stupidly continued to eat the bars, getting sick every time (although not as bad). I thought it must have been one of the other ingredients, since it was milk...

Thank you for this very detailed explanation. However, I'm not sure I agree with this statement "if your child can eat a food without developing any symptoms, then they are unlikely to be allergic to that food." My son has tested negative to pretty much every allergy skin prick and blood test - only positive to hazelnuts one time and walnuts another time, both in skin prick tests. He suffered from severe eczema, head to toe, and we were looking for answers. There was no particular food that...

What advice to you give to parents of children with eczema/asthma who may have false positives from IgE testing? My daughter's IgE numbers are off the charts, and we've been avoiding likely allergens. The only food she's (accidently) ingested that we've avoided based on likely food allergy is cow's milk (to which she had an immediate negative reaction). We've consulted 2 allergists, and both have reommended avoiding the foods she's likely allergic to until she is 5 or 6 at which time they...

I had my son tested IgE with an allergist because of his eczema condition. We knew his allergy to milk at age of one, hives right after 1 oz of whole milk. He was bs mostly the first 6 months, then alimentum after. He had regular Similic couple times before 6 months but no reactions. His IgE for milk is 6.29, so I think it confirmed his milk allergy. He is still on alimentum and he is 16 1/2 months. His IgE for egg white is above 50, I had not introduced egg to him yet, but with the MMR (had...

My daughter is allergic to eggs and has never passed a flu vaccine skin test. This year is the first time she's ever had a flu vaccine. She developed a rash (not common with her) several hours later. While this may be a reaction to something else, I'm reluctant to have her vaccinated again unless she outgrows the allergy. Her doctor dismissed my concerns completely. We're looking for a new allergist.

When it is time to retest her allergies, her parents pick 6-8 possible allergens to test at that time. They are testing through blood tests once or twice a year. What gets tested depends on what she has been eating and what symptoms she has been having. So, when something has not been tested at one particular time, they continue to assume an active allergy based on prior testing and continue to avoid that food. Some foods are tested more frequently than others (e.g., dairy is tested most...

I was complacent. My 14 year old daughter was complacent. Eye-rolls and annoyed posture every time I asked if she had her epi-pen. She doesn't remember her reaction when she was 2.75 years old and there have been many, many expired epi-pens since. I used to say it was the best money I ever threw away. Until this year, I got annoyed. I was certain I had sent in an epi-pen in the fall for school. The nurse sent an email to all delinquent parents of food allergic kids. "Your child's epi-pen is...

Daddy gave him a Ritz Bitz PB Sandwich Cracker and he reacted... at the ER, they told us he is probably allergic to peanuts and to make that appointment with the allergist. We did and at 14 months old, he was diagnosed with an anaphylatic peanut allergy. Even though I used to be a nurse, I...
