Re: Spreading Food Allergy Awareness One Teal Pumpkin at a Time

RW ·
What are some other ways people deal with Halloween? I don't think this teal thing should stop by any means, but I am having a hard time seeing it as a widely accepted solution. I have a peanut/treenut allergic kid and I have very mixed emotions... On the one hand, I like the added awareness, but on the other hand... I think this might be expecting too much . In our town, some neighborhoods get hundreds of kids and per item non-food stuff can get expensive. Plus, I really don't want my...

Hi RW! Some people keep the cost down by ordering bulk non-food treats online, or by giving kids a choice and asking, especially if the parents are nearby. Have you also seen this year's post on craft ideas ... You could also bake a fun safe-for-you cake . My preteen just likes being with his friends, for the most part. I like the idea of donating extra candy to volunteers in your town. Some dentists have always collected it in exchange for something...

Re: Non-Cupcake Classroom Birthday Celebration Idea

Bustermonkey ·
That is a cute idea. However, please remember anytime we offer food to our child's classmates we risk allergies. My youngest daughters is allergic to Yellow 5 (which is found in almost all applesauce brands - except the all natural). If she were to eat this snack, she would have a very severe rash for the remainder of the day. Most of us send snacks that avoid peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, milk, wheat. But, allergies come in many different forms. For classroom birthdays, I always avoid food.

Re: Non-Cupcake Classroom Birthday Celebration Idea

MAM-mom ·
Hi Bustermonkey, you make a good point. There are also children who are allergic to apples, so even the natural applesauces would be an issue. I think the thing to consider, whatever the occasion, is who is the audience, and what are the specific allergies people are dealing with. With obesity and allergies such a concern across America, I applaud using fruit as a treat, but only if it is safe for the intended audience. Non-food treats are also a great choice.

Could gelatin replace xanthan gum? I'd be making other substitutions and DS has never had a "real "cookie. , so if it was a little off from the original consistency, it's OK.

Re: Milk-Free Skillet Cookie Sundaes with Caramel Sauce

I would give it a try...or I might even omit it. I made muffins with a similar flour combo the other night and it wasn't until later that I realized I didn't put in the xanthan. But those did have more applesauce which has pectin. What other changes are you making? I think that might be a factor too. I just find gelatin rather gummy.
