Kids With Food Allergies (KFA) hosted a webinar on August 11, 2015 on Coping With Food Allergy Anxiety: Back to School and More.

Dr. Gianine D. Rosenblum is a New Jersey psychologist in private practice and a parent to a child with food allergies. She specializes in the treatment of trauma and has clients with anxiety related to food allergy and other issues.

We are grateful to Dr. Rosenblum for donating her time to prepare and give this webinar. We thank Mylan for providing an unrestricted sponsorship of this webinar.

The presentation focused on children’s anxiety across different age groups. But, the coping strategies Dr. Rosenblum described are universal.

Here is the video recording of the webinar. We have also included a list of related resources and handouts below.

Some key points from Dr. Rosenblum's presentation:

It is time to seek help if anxiety is:

  • Interfering with regular, safe, liked activities
  • Causing loss of pleasure
  • Causing one to not take care of one's self (brush teeth)
  • Distracting to the point where you can’t focus on tasks, like school
  • Causing avoidance of necessary things, like school

How can I manage anxiety?

  • Very effective interventions: behavioral, physical, psychological, medical
  • Goal is to stop avoiding things that are safe
  • DAILY practice of:
    • Breathing/relaxation/meditation exercises
    • Imagery exercises
    • Self-monitoring
  • Do (action) rather than talk (role play, tour school)
  • Exercise
  • Engage in (any) activities that give a sense of competence and control
  • Allow expression of other emotions (holding in anger, sorrow, jealousy, or negative energy can increase anxiety)
  • Medication/Professional Help
