Question
My son is allergic to tree nuts. At his camp, they will have bonfires. If they use pecan wood, can the smoke cause an allergic reaction?
Answer

Allergic reactions to tree nuts (e.g., pecans), are due to eating the specific nut proteins in it. These are responsible for the allergic reaction. They are not found in wood smoke.

Burning pecan wood would not release these allergens. There is a very low risk for someone with a pecan nut allergy.
