Question
Sweet almond oil is in a lot of beauty products. I’ve heard about its beauty benefits. I have a peanut and tree nut allergy. Is it safe for me to use it on my skin and hair?
Answer

Knowing the specific tree nuts you’re allergic to would be helpful. If you are allergic to almonds, using sweet almond oil on your skin and hair needs to be discussed with your doctor.

The chances of a nut oil containing allergenic protein depends on how it is extracted.

  • Refined oils are extracted using chemical agents or high heat. Generally, they don’t contain proteins or other natural nutrients.
  • Unrefined (cold-pressed) nut oils can contain allergenic proteins.

More and more, “natural” cleansers and cosmetic products use non-refined nut oils. This includes products like:

  • Soaps
  • Moisturizers
  • Hair care

There is a potential for topical (skin) exposure to allergenic proteins. Before using the product, confirm whether a nut oil ingredient is refined.

Discuss this with your allergist for more guidance.
