Question
I was recently in the ER due to a food allergy reaction. I accidentally ate a dessert with walnuts. I have a tree nut allergy. The ER doctor mentioned something about a rebound reaction. What does that mean?
Answer

A rebound food allergy reaction is when you have allergy symptoms again after the first reaction goes away. This is known as a β€œbiphasic reaction.” These symptoms typically happen around 1 to 8 hours after the first reaction. But they can happen up to 72 hours later.

It is important for emergency department staff to monitor you for a longer time after a first reaction. This is to make sure that any biphasic reactions are quickly spotted and treated. This is especially important in cases of anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) due to a food allergen. The risk of a biphasic reaction can make treatment harder. You may need longer observation and treatment.

Let your doctor know if you have ever had a biphasic reaction. This can impact your emergency care plan for allergic reactions.
