No need to swirl! I split the batter into 6 bowls and colored the batter using gel coloring. Then I do 1/2 Tablespoon of each color just one on top of each other. With a larger cake the layers will make pretty regular "stripes". As cupcakes the colors stay mostly as separate layers but tend to get a little swirly all on their own.
