I just wanted to add that I just booked a flight from the USA to Europe with KLM (Dutch Airline) operated by Delta. After purchasing our tickets I called up Delta to notify them about my 3 years old son's peanut/tree nut and dog allergies and I asked what their policy was to accomodate us. Just like on Air Canada, they ensured me they will create a 3-row buffer zone in front and behind us. They will not serve any nuts to these passengers. Good to know!

Southwest allows early boarding for airborne peanut allergies- enough time for you to go and wipe down the seats and trays before everyone else gets on. They also avoid actually serving peanuts on the flight- they gave cookies and crackers instead.
I have been on several Delta Airline flights recently where they announced that peanuts would not be served due to a fellow passenger's peanut allergy.
What about allergic reaction due to airborne peanut protein? The Epipen works for a short duration until emergency room medical treatment can be given. What is your opinion for a long flight?
Hi Francine. In our case, our allergist told us always carry 2 Epipens at all times - every day. When we fly, we are supposed to carry 3 Epipens, Benadryl, and liquid Prednisone (steroids). In the event of an in-air anaphylaxis we were directed to give our son his Epipen and wait a few minutes. Hi Francine, A good approach would be for you to discuss this with your child's allergist in advance of the plane trip and see if your child's emergency care plan needs to be updated for the flight and the trip away from home. You might need to carry more epinephrine autoinjectors, for instance, based upon what your allergist will recommend.
I would recommend wiping down the whole seating area, not just the tray table. I would also bring all my own food. I think it is great if airlines are offering peanut or nut-free flights but I think there 35,000 feet isn't where I would want to find they made any type of mistake. My daughter is now 13 and has always had belly issues. She had skin and RAST testing done as a toddler with no indications of food allergies. At 11 her belly isues worsened and RAST testing was redone with nujmerous positive results. We did skin testing and she was found to be allergic to milk, egg yolk, and fish. She has what you term a Non-IgE mediated reaction. Oncethe foods were fully eliminated from her diet her belly issues went away, she was no longer bloated and felt much better.
I think it's important to differentiate between "food allergy" (IgE mediated) and "food sensitivity". Both are immune mediated reactions, but involve different mediators (chemicals). I had my son tested IgE with an allergist because of his eczema condition. We knew his allergy to milk at age of one, hives right after 1 oz of whole milk. My daughter actually tested negative several times to some things as a baby despite reacting to them and then went on to test positive with low numbers. My daughter (now 16 years old) was diagnosed at age 2 and had two subsequent positive skin tests to peanuts and tree nuts, but has never had a reaction at all other than her first (to walnut) at about 1 yr old. So I was hoping that the peanut positive was a false positive all along. Yes, we've been seeing allergists since she was 6 or 9 months old. We have moved a couple of times and had to switch allergists and it can be confusing, some say lip swelling alone is anaphylaxis, what she had with banana and mustard, and some say it's not. It's hard when allergist's don't agree.

My son ate cashews by the handful with absolutely no reaction and then went into anaphylactic shock after eating one. How does that fit into this? We often mess up between food allergy and food intolerance. Food allergy usually comes on suddenly. Even a small amount of food can trigger an allergic reaction. Food allergy appens every time you eat that particular foo and can be life-threatening too. Can somebody be okay eating a food but not be okay touching it? My daughter (5 years old) successfully passed two oral food challenges for hazelnuts, which included eating increasing amounts of hazelnuts and also a spoon full of Nutella (this was given after she had eaten her last dose of hazelnuts).
