I applaud your effort to provide education by writing this letter. Thank you very much for meeting this with a helpful hand. I have one request as you move forward in providing education and awareness-- In these discussions please be mindful that we need to educate and raise awareness that life-threatening food allergies are not restricted to those with nut & peanut allergy. Unfortunately too many people harbor this dangerous misimpression that only nuts cause life threatening reactions.

You know, I remember seeing Smurfs 2 for the first time. The birthday party scene had me in stitches. Of course, other parents didn't think that I should think it was funny. I wasn't offended at all. To be honest, I was laughing because I could relate to the experience! That is exactly what I looked like at birthday parties: The helicopter mom at the ready with an Epi-Pen. As seriously as I take my daughters allergies, I have had to learn to laugh at myself. I also find that if I take a...

Ellie, I agree that humor and self-deprecation are priceless tools to have at the ready when dealing with food allergies. I've never wanted to be THAT mom even when I've HAD to be that mom. The best solution, of course, is if I could zap FA out of existence once and for all.

I picked up some Qrunch burgers to try & plan to offer them to the kids for dinner tonight. They were in the freezer section near other "veggie burgers". Complete ingredient list: organic millet, organic quinoa, organic coconut oil, organic onion, organic carrots, organic broccoli, organic spinach, arrowroot starch, organic apple cider vinegar, psyllum seed powder, kosher salt, organic garlic, non-GMO canola oil I'll report back after we do the "taste test" ...

Sesame seed is non top eight allergen so it would be safest to call them directly. There are two different Synders companies One is Synders of Hanover the other is Synders of Berlin bith make pretzels so you may luck out with one if the other isn’t safe good luck

I have a quick question. If I submit a recipe, KWFA then owns it? If KWFA reprints the recipe or uses it, would I be mentioned as the original creator or do I loose all rights to it once I submit? Thanks!

Thank you! I am so happy to share this one with everyone and I have to admit - this birthday cake and set up was my favorite project I have done. My kids loved the nearly 6 foot barn and farm animals I made so much that we used it as a wall decoration in their play room afterwards!

Not really true. Coconut was recently classified by a tree nut by the FDA, but botonists classify it as a fruit or seed. My son is severly allergic to almost all tree nuts, and is able to eat coconut. I am definitely not recommending that someone just go and give their tree nut allergic child coconut, but ask your allergist. Coconut allergy is out there, but rare.

Andrea, I don't use any special allergy recipes. I use regular cookbooks, then substitute out when necessary. I use Fleschman's Unsalted Margarine (dairy-free) when margarine is called for. I use a Flax Seed egg replacer (1 tablespoon flaxseed meal + 3 tablespoons water, let sit for 5 minutes. You double this for two eggs, triple it for 3, etc.). I use Wow Butter instead of peanut butter. I used Amanda's Own Chocolate chips (Top 8 Free), and I had some final bags of dairy/nut-free...

Hi Kathryn, Hope you are well. Thank you for publishing this vegan Pineapple cake recipe. It sure looks good. I need to attempt to make a gluten free version and will do so shortly but have one query. I noticed that there is no butter/margarine/oil in your recipe and wondered if this was being replaced by one of the other ingredients. Would welcome your confirmation so that I can proceed with making a gluten free version. Thnks. Have a lovely day. Cheers mork.

Hi, Mork ... I'm not Kathryn, but I did want to share that many, many times, applesauce is used as a substitute for oil or butter in low fat muffins and quick breads. I know this because my daughter is allergic to apples and we have to be careful of any sort of low-fat muffin or quick bread. I'm also hoping that our resident GF baking guru Kathy P will see this and drop in with her suggestions. Do let us know how the cake turns out! You can either update us here, or you can post a new topic...

Mork - do you have a gf flour mix in mind for this? This is a very "wet" recipe with the applesauce and pineapple with juice. You may need to increase the amount of flour to compensate for that. I've found that to be the case when converting recipes that are low fat and have a lot of liquid.

Hi Kathy, Noted will use 140 gram GF flour blend for each cup of gluten flour, thank you for this advice. We do have our homemade GF mix blend but will not be using that this time as one of the ingredients, the new packet of potato starch, is suspect as there was some reaction earlier & needs to be retested. For this recipe will be using a store bought GF blend. Cheers. Have a joyful day.

As a four month old, my son was diagnosed with sesame allergy. We attempted a food challenge with his allergist at age three years. He had "severe life-threatening reaction" (doctor's words) to the smallest dose, equal to about one seed. Continuing to avoid all "natural flavor" and " spice" when companies will not disclose ingredients to us is difficult. Now, as an almost nine year old, he has never eaten in a restaurant. Navigating these school aged years is difficult and handling...
