The Just Mayo label warns “May contain soy.” In my experience, this means that there is soy hidden in there somewhere. As in the Helman’s Canola Mayo which actually does have soy in it which is included under “natural flavors” on the label, it may be hidden under the “fruit and vegetable juice” in the label. So the search for Soy Free Mayo continues. Soy is in everything. When I was a child, no one ever heard of soy except in sauce or tofu in a Chinese restaurant. It is in everything for 2...

Hi, Carla, and hugs on the frustration. Way to go on carefully reading the label! You may be on mobile and can't see the original date of this blog -- but it was in 2015. Just Mayo reformulated later on to add soy. I believe there is a soy-free mayo by Vegenaise . I'm not sure of the facility info, but no soy ingredients are listed in the soy-free variety. Look for the light green lid. I'm not sure of the rest of your allergy "avoids," so it may or may not be safe for your family. As always,...

If you are corn-free then you should NOT eat xanthan Gum. Out of all the patients I know with reactions or allergies to corn they all react to xanthan. A better choice for the corn-allergy population is guar gum. Also, for the very sensitive all of the ingredients needed to have been sourced carefully to avoid corn cross contamination during harvest and processing. When I saw this product on the shelf I was very disappointed to see xanthan. I know a few companies who claim their xanthan is...

Thanks for sharing that. I've found it to be very individualized on corn issue. Neither of my kids ever had issues w/ xanthan. It's important to know how to I know sometimes xanthan cause issues not related to corn for people. Not all xanthan is cultured on corn. I know Bob's Red Mill brand is on wheat. Some have issues w/ guar gum as well since it's a legume and can cause GI issues in some.

There are definitely different sensitivity levels to corn products. I know we cannot use Bob's of any type because when we contacted them they even said there is a risk of cross contamination to corn because of their procedures. Guar gum definitely is an issue for some with legume but isnt derived from corn. There does seem to be a part of the population that both reacts to wheat and corn, but I know on the various corn allergy support groups it is strong recommended to avoid all xanthan gum...

do the just mayo packets require refrigeration? If not, this could be a very handy thing to be able to carry. I can see many uses. - tuna salad on the go -honey mustard dipping sauce. - packets of honey and mustard needed too. -just having mayo on a sandwich... yum!

DS and I went to our walmart to look for them. We found Just Mayo - but only in the regular packaging, not the little travel packets. It was on the bottom shelf with the other mayos. Shelf stable until opened. The price is about 1/2 of Vegenaise so we bought one. DS likes it. DH and I have not tried it yet. I'm very excited for an egg free mayo I can purchase locally (nearest whole foods is 45min away) AND is half the cost. So we'll be keeping an eye out for the travel packets. I'll also be...

Dh says he likes it better than vegenaise. I think it's more savory tasting - vegenaise is more sweet. I also discovered this is the company that appeared on an episode of Bizarre Eats. Still can't find the travel packets though - even in lexington walmarts. We'll keep an eye out though.

Hi Tiffani - it's hard to find gluten-free products without xanthan gum. There tends to be a lot of controversy over the gums added to gluten-free foods. Xanthan gum is not technically derived from corn. It's extracted from a microbe that can be grown on a refined corn sugar as a substrate. The end product is highly refined and "shouldn't" have any intact corn proteins remaining. Everyone is different and there are some people who do react to xanthan gum. This gets really tricky with the...

Kathy, thank you SO much for that information! I am new to this so I did not know those details I had just been told to avoid gum in general because it was derived from corn! That actually makes me feel better about trying some products with xantham gum. I am looking for a box cake mix for my son’s first birthday and having the hardest time. Current allergies are corn, milk, egg, wheat, oat, soy, treenuts, peanut, chicken, and banana. Some of this may be false positives, but we are avoiding...

Kate is SUPER grateful for KFA ... it means that she gets to live a "normal" life without me freaking out all the time. I can't tell you the times that I've raced to the Kids With Food Allergies' online support community to ask a question: "Okay, this happened, so what do I do NOW?" I've never felt alone in this battle since that first post to KFA.

It must be clarified that OIT is not a cure. It is changing the disease state. IgE is naturally involved in helminth defense (worm infections). A "low intensity" worm infection is IgE dominated. This is equivalent to food allergy. A "high intensity" worm infection is IgG4 dominated (high IgG4/IgE) ratio. This is equivalent to a person with food allergy who has received OIT. In food allergy, your immune system has been programmed to recognize food items as worms. So continued food allergen...

Omalizumab is manufactured using Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells and is therefore contaminated with numerous CHO proteins. It is well documented that patients start developing anti-drug antibodies (ADA) against monoclonal antibody treatments such as omalizumab. This can result in drug ineffectiveness. More worrisome is antibodies created against CHO. It is well known from cancer research that immunization with homologous xenogeneic proteins (injection of animal proteins like CHO, that...

I also want to add that sesame is also used in bath and body care products. It and mustard are incredibly hard allergens to stay away from because they could be "natural flavors" or "spices." We don't buy any processed foods or eat at restaurants. Bakeries have sesame seeds everywhere!

As a four month old, my son was diagnosed with sesame allergy. We attempted a food challenge with his allergist at age three years. He had "severe life-threatening reaction" (doctor's words) to the smallest dose, equal to about one seed. Continuing to avoid all "natural flavor" and " spice" when companies will not disclose ingredients to us is difficult. Now, as an almost nine year old, he has never eaten in a restaurant. Navigating these school aged years is difficult and handling...

My 9 yr old son is highly allergic to sesame and had a recent near anaphylaxis reaction to sesame consumption from a salad dressing that contained sesame but sesame wasn’t declared as an allergen. If we ever go out to restaurants to eat he can’t take bread and anything with secret spices and sometimes as simple as pasta dish as sesame is being used more abundantly nowadays.Pizza also is tough for the most part as flour for dough may have traces of sesame. Its a shame that we are far behind the...

This is a happy new year gift, indeed! Thank you for sharing this great news. For the military mention, I often wonder whether my child's mustard allergy is related to the mustard gas my father was exposed to in Vietnam (Agent Orange exfoliant). I am hopeful some smart researcher takes an interest in toxicological impacts of the chemical exposures our military heroes get exposed to. Along with whether the exposures relate to food allergies in either them, their children and grandchildren. Or...
