...or, you can make your own powdered sugar in a "dry" Vitamix blender container by grinding up regular sugar...but I prefer to buy it at Trader Joe's since I feel as if I make almost everything else mysef! Trader Joe's version has tapicoa starch instead of corn starch.
Wholesome Sweeteners powdered sugar is also corn free - it uses tapioca starch. Trader Joe's is great, but it's only available "seasonally" during the winter/holiday baking season. They may still have some left, so stock up if you find it!
It would not matter whether the pet was on the plane or not, the pet owners are covered in their pet dander you are going to react to the owners if the pets are left at home. While we too deal with significant allergies that prevent us from using public/ private(airlines are a private industry) transit as much as we would like for our child, it isn't the worlds job to go pet free, peanut free, dairy free, corn free, gluten free, soy free- etc. We simply drive and do what we can to keep her...
India Tree Natural Food Colors India Tree offers plant-based food coloring with no synthetic dyes or corn syrup. They are manufactured in a facility that is free of tree nuts and peanuts and do not use gluten. Although they cannot promise that all items are free of allergens, they do participate in an Allergen Control Program to help reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Some of their products are vegan and non-GMO. Their website contains a recipe for Easter egg dying which produces soft,...
I can't speak to this recipe, but because we avoid corn, I make a corn free (but NOT safe for milk or wheat food allergies) version of condensed cream of mushroom soup, with cream and flour , and I freeze it very successfully. This is despite the fact that most freezer resources tell you that you can't freeze cream-based, flour-based sauces without a loss of taste or texture. True, if you were using this as cream of mushroom soup, you'd need to add more milk to adjust for the thickness of...
@texasgirl Just wondering what the company name was you had found ... DD has to avoid corn, and that can be hard for a girl who likes makeup as much as she does!

Our Food and Cooking forum is a great place to ask questions about safe substitutes to make recipes work for you -- the moms on KFA's Food and Cooking forum helped me plan a corn-free, peanut free, soy-free Chinese New Year Banquet, so I'd say they can just about do anything.
That is definitely a concern StephC and something we tried to highlight. Most of the hotels I've been in lately have gone to "pod" type systems - but not K-cups. And they tend to only have regular and decaf coffee. I don't know if many people travel w/ their own flavored coffee, but it's certainly a possible issue. As Allison alluded to, Melkorey and I wound up cooking in a hotel room one night. We were at an AAFA function and a storm calling for flash flooding was rolling in. There were no...
If you are corn-free then you should NOT eat xanthan Gum. Out of all the patients I know with reactions or allergies to corn they all react to xanthan. A better choice for the corn-allergy population is guar gum. Also, for the very sensitive all of the ingredients needed to have been sourced carefully to avoid corn cross contamination during harvest and processing. When I saw this product on the shelf I was very disappointed to see xanthan. I know a few companies who claim their xanthan is...
Thanks for sharing that. I've found it to be very individualized on corn issue. Neither of my kids ever had issues w/ xanthan. It's important to know how to I know sometimes xanthan cause issues not related to corn for people. Not all xanthan is cultured on corn. I know Bob's Red Mill brand is on wheat. Some have issues w/ guar gum as well since it's a legume and can cause GI issues in some.
There are definitely different sensitivity levels to corn products. I know we cannot use Bob's of any type because when we contacted them they even said there is a risk of cross contamination to corn because of their procedures. Guar gum definitely is an issue for some with legume but isnt derived from corn. There does seem to be a part of the population that both reacts to wheat and corn, but I know on the various corn allergy support groups it is strong recommended to avoid all xanthan gum...
Just an FYI, the cake mixes have xantham gum which is typically derived from corn. My son has a corn allergy. I emailed the company to ask what their xantham gum is derived from since the claim to be corn free and I have not gotten a response.
Hi, Tiffani, thanks! This is an older blog post, so it's good that you reached out to the company. My DD has a corn allergy as well, so I know how hard it is to find things that work for your family. Welcome! You'll find awesome support here!
Hi Tiffani - it's hard to find gluten-free products without xanthan gum. There tends to be a lot of controversy over the gums added to gluten-free foods. Xanthan gum is not technically derived from corn. It's extracted from a microbe that can be grown on a refined corn sugar as a substrate. The end product is highly refined and "shouldn't" have any intact corn proteins remaining. Everyone is different and there are some people who do react to xanthan gum. This gets really tricky with the...
Kathy, thank you SO much for that information! I am new to this so I did not know those details I had just been told to avoid gum in general because it was derived from corn! That actually makes me feel better about trying some products with xantham gum. I am looking for a box cake mix for my son’s first birthday and having the hardest time. Current allergies are corn, milk, egg, wheat, oat, soy, treenuts, peanut, chicken, and banana. Some of this may be false positives, but we are avoiding...
So I'm looking at this and thinking it may be something to trial a little with my son this summer. We know potato and coconut are doable. Would the extracts have a lot of proteins in them? And food starch is usually a corn source, right? OMG I just realized he may be able to try this! Also heard it may be right at our S&S
My son is 9. We don't eat at restaurants very often. We have found the very few that he seems to do well with. One being our local Mexican restaurant. Fast food restaurants are pretty much out of the question. The Mexican place(s) is very accommodating to him so far as making his food without the tortilla or shell. (He always orders taco w/o shell - he is allergic to corn/hard shell, wheat/soft shell) Since he is allergic to corn, that leaves their chips out too. They have always been very...
I wanted to let you know that carnival cruise line allows prepackaged food brought on in your carry on. Also, 12 cans of liquid drinks per person. We leave for our trip next month with carnival and they told me with my corn and soy allergies they will pack me a lunch for going off the ship! I'm so excited to see how it goes!
Welcome, Cindy! I'm especially interested in how it goes for you since my DD manages a corn allergy! How long have you been managing your food allergies?
My allergies started to get serious 5 years ago. Soy is anaphylaxis and corn is rash and feeling sick for 3 to 4 days. I will definitely post my carnival cruise experience when I get back in march.
Thanks! And feel free to start a thread on our Main Support Forum about any questions or ideas you have, or to join in on our What's For Dinner thread . Corn and soy are EVERYWHERE, and it takes some creative thinking to come up with favorite treats.
these look awesome and easy for the kids to help with. Thanks for sharing. we just made the sunbutter chocolate fudge last night and that is also great. has anyone tried a coacoa bar from the grocery store? I just got one that lists the ingredients as: 100% chocolate and that's it. I also need to stay clear of corn, wheat, soy, dairy, nuts & eggs..wondering if anyone has had any luck using a bar marked 100% chocolate.
Hi Denise! I've never seen a chocolate bar that didn't have other ingredients such as sugar, cocoa butter and emulsifiers--what brand is it if you don't mind sharing? I've had some 100% chocolate, but it was basically just a brick of pressed cocoa powder and wouldn't have been suitable for using in a recipe like this one. Without those other ingredients I can't imagine it would melt very well. The other consideration would be to make sure you had contacted the manufacturer of the chocolate...
This is a great recipe! We have a corn and a dairy allergy in our household and my kids and I are making a pumpkin pie from scratch for Thanksgiving... I have a blog entry that describes how to prepare pumpkin from scratch (as in using those little pumpkins the kids picked out around Halloween time). It also tells how to make your own dairy-free, corn-free graham cracker crust, and what to do with the seeds from the pumpkin! :-) http://anunexpectedlynourishin...ves-way-to-fall.html
Hey! That's the pie I made yesterday! Except that I used canned coconut milk, modified corn starch, and added cinnamon. Cybelle Pascal's rice milk version of the recipe includes a packet of gelatin as well, I guess it helps thicken.
