School is a common place for children to experience anaphylaxis – a serious allergic reaction. But the Weatherford Independent School District in Texas recently took a step backward. They created a policy that guides staff to give Benadryl® for severe allergic reactions, instead of unassigned stock epinephrine. But this goes against medical evidence.

Ingredient labels became clearer when the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act went into effect in 2006 – at least for those allergic to one of the top eight major food allergens. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, peanuts and soybeans as major food allergens.

Eczema is common among children with food allergies. That's not surprising since they are both caused by reactions of the immune system. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common form of eczema. Many people think of it as “dry skin” or “sensitive skin.” But people who don't know about AD aren't aware of the social, emotional and financial impact it can have on families who manage it.
Sesame allergy ranks ninth in prevalence behind the top 8 allergens. But manufacturers are not required to clearly label sesame on their products. It can even go unlabeled under terms like “spices” and “natural flavoring.” This is very distressing as reactions to sesame can be among the most severe for adults and children. We are asking community members who have had an adverse reaction to sesame, or care for someone who has, to share their story with the FDA.

Others have been given one auto-injector when two have been prescribed, as decided by their insurance company. Families are walking away from pharmacies empty-handed, or driving miles out of their way to fill their prescription
